Spelling Rules that we have learned:
Final e Rule: Sneaky "e" changes the short sound to a long sound!
*If a short vowel comes before the /ch/ sound, then we spell with tch. Most any other time, it will be ch. *G can make two sounds. If an i, e, or y is behind a g, most of the time it will make a soft sound as in giraffe. At the end of the word, when we spell with the letter g, if it follows a short vowel, we will spell with dge, as in bridge. If it is a long vowel as in age, it will just be a ge. *If a one syllable word ends in f, l, s, or z then we need to double that letter. For example: floss, puff, still, fizz *There are "ghost letter" digraphs: kn, gn, wr. *Ew says a long u sound. *Ow can make two sounds! One is cow and the other is blow. We are continuing with multisyllabic words. your child should know how to read and spell -tion, -ment, -ture, -ly at the end of words. We are also learning about the doubling and dropping rule! We are now beginning two syllable words. We are learning about Final Stable Syllables this week. We are learning -tion, -ly, -ture, -ment. Keep practicing your syllable cards that I sent home!
